What is a whole-body MRI?

That's not medical gatekeeping — it's how screening earns trust. Tests like the mammogram, low-dose lung CT, and colon cancer screening are recommended because large, long-running studies proved they save lives and that the benefits outweigh the harms. Whole-body MRI hasn't been through that proving ground. Until it is, nobody actually knows whether scanning healthy people this way helps them, harms them, or mostly just worries them.
There is one genuine exception, and it matters: people with rare hereditary cancer-predisposition syndromes — Li-Fraumeni syndrome is the best-known example — face a dramatically higher lifetime cancer risk, and for them annual whole-body MRI is a recommended part of surveillance.
